FAA / Pilot Evaluations

FAA/pilot evaluations are designed to rule out any aeromedically significant cognitive deficits or disqualifying conditions (e.g., ADHD, alcohol use disorder, major depression, dementia) that may impact an individual’s ability to safely perform their duties as a pilot. This process often starts when an applicant is evaluated by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) who completes a physical and reviews the individual’s medical history. Dr. Brower performs these specific evaluations, which include administration of the CogScreen.

  • Should the AME develop any concerns regarding a disqualifying condition (e.g., ADHD or bipolar disorder), they are unable to grant medical certification and will often refer the applicant for further evaluation. Sometimes an individual who has been flying for several years may acquire a disqualifying medical or psychological condition (e.g., head trauma, stroke, multiple sclerosis, major depressive disorder, substance abuse or dependence); in those instances, the AME will require the individual to complete additional evaluation in order for them to maintain or reacquire their previous medical certificate.

  • There are different standardized FAA protocols that require neuropsychological evaluation. While some evaluations can be completed within half of a day, others may require two full days’ worth of testing. The cost of these evaluations varies, depending on the amount of testing required and the complexity of the case. More specific information regarding costs will be provided, once it is determined what services are needed. When appropriate, coordination with your AME and consultants within the FAA will take place to ensure the required testing is completed without creating any additional costs or unnecessary obstacles.
